Congenital Heart Surgery

Our Congenital Heart Surgery team is dedicated to providing optimal care using state-of-the-art technology for children and adults with cardiac diseases and anomalies, and we offer results that rank among the best in the United States.

Dr. John Kupferschmid and Dr. Anthony Azakie have expertise in the following areas:

Surgical correction of complex congenital heart defects in children and adults and the treatment of acquired heart disease in children

Assisting patients, families and referring physicians in coordinating care to ensure the best possible long-term outcomes

In addition, we have been involved in developing and/or implementing a number of significant innovations in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery:

Strategy to optimize single ventricle (especially hypoplastic left heart syndrome) palliation using off-pump/minimally-invasive procedures

  • Hybrid approaches to avoid cardio-pulmonary bypass
  • Primary complex neonatal repair versus staged treatment
  • Optimizing outcomes for low-birth-weight babies
  • Valve repair strategies for lesions like tetralogy of Fallot, congenital mitral valve and aortic root disease
  • Rehabilitation strategies for left ventricles that are marginal in size or function
  • Surgical strategy for complex and severe left ventricular outflow tract obstruction
  • Primary and secondary suture-less repair technique for high-risk pulmonary venous disease
  • Hybrid per-ventricular valve insertion

Our interdisciplinary approach optimizes patient care and results.

We work closely with the following subspecialists and support services:

  • Pediatric and adult cardiologists
  • Pediatric anesthesiologists
  • Neonatologists
  • Pediatric intensivists
  • Social services
