Stephen C Carey, MD

Cardiovascular Disease
Aside from a detour to pursue a doctorate in synthetic organic chemistry, Dr. Stephen Carey planned to study medicine when he was an undergraduate at University of California-Riverside.

"But I got way-laid. The more I studied organic chemistry, the more I liked it - the creativity, the beauty of it," he says of his graduate and post-graduate work at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Envious of his colleagues at Harvard Medical School and ready to return to California, Dr. Carey returned to his original plan and completed a medical degree at the University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles, California. He joined the United States Air Force Reserves and was on active duty while he completed his internal medicine residency at David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in California and his cardiology fellowship at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He continued his service as a staff cardiologist at Scott Air Force Base in Bellevue, Illinois until 1996 when he joined Heart and Vascular Institute of Texas in San Antonio. Dr. Carey has practiced in New Braunfels since 2014. He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease and has passed the North American Society for Pacing and Electrophysiology exam on cardiac pacing and cardioversion defibrillation.
